Administration of FundThe University of Manitoba was established in 1877 in Winnipeg as an Agricultural College. It has grown from this modest beginning to an institution that today offers more than 100 accredited and internationally-recognized programs for students to choose from. In a typical year there are approximately 50,000 students in degree and continuing education programs. It employs more than 5,200 academic and support staff and is the Province of Manitoba’s major research institution. The need to attract and support talented teaching staff and students is as great today as it has ever been. The University has a variety of bursaries, scholarships and fellowships available in various disciplines. These have been established by individuals, corporations, and governments over the years, and are a vital part of supporting academic excellence and research proposals. The University is very committed to ensuring that their awards program and research is of the highest quality in every respect and our Fund is fortunate to be a partner with them. The University of Manitoba is the Trustee and Administrator of all funds donated to The McCrorie-West Family Fellowship for Alzheimer Research. The Fund has been established as an endowment fund in order to provide for awards well into the future. The University’s endowment funds are managed by outside investment firms who follow conservative investment policies. The University also has a policy that bases the payout from the endowment at the expected real return of the assets over time, adjusted for inflation. This rate is currently at 4.25% and is reviewed annually to ensure it is realistic given the long term outlook of the endowment fund investments. In addition to overseeing the management of all donations, the University also coordinates the administration of the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative. This Manitoba Government sponsored program allows for matching of donations on a dollar for dollar basis as program funds allow. The McCrorie-West Family Fellowship Fund has received matching funds in the past, and subject to available program dollars, may receive this benefit in the future.
